How to Apply a Wall Decal: A Step-by-Step Guide

Wall decals are one of the easiest ways to personalise a room without paint or permanent changes. If you have never applied one before, do not worry. Every quote decal from Two Little Giggles arrives with the transfer sheet already applied, which does most of the hard work for you.

Before you start

  • Clean the wall. Wipe away dust and dirt with a damp cloth, then let the wall dry completely.
  • Check your paint. If the wall has been freshly painted, wait at least 8 weeks for the paint to cure. Applying too soon can mean poor adhesion.
  • Check the surface. Decals suit smooth surfaces. They are not recommended on textured, rough or silicone-based paints such as wash and wear or suede finishes.

Applying a larger quote decal

  1. Lay it flat. Your decal comes with a pre-applied transfer sheet. Start by laying it flat on a clean surface.
  2. Position it. Hold the decal against the wall where you would like it. The transfer sheet keeps the lettering straight and in the right order.
  3. Press firmly. Use a squeegee or a similar tool to press the decal onto the wall so it sticks properly.
  4. Peel back slowly. Slowly peel the transfer sheet away, leaving the design on the wall. If any part lifts with the sheet, gently guide it back onto the wall.

Tip: for big designs such as house rules, cut the decal into smaller sections and apply one line at a time. It is easier to manage and keeps everything lined up.

Applying smaller quote decals

For smaller quotes, cut around each word or section, position them on the wall, press down firmly and slowly peel back the transfer sheet. You can reuse the transfer sheet several times when you apply a design in sections.

Applying peel-and-stick kids decals

Peel-and-stick decals are the simplest. Peel them off the backing and stick them straight onto the wall. If your design has lots of pieces, such as a tree with leaves, follow the diagram included in your order.

Take your time

Your first decal can take a little while, and that is completely normal. A steady hand and a bit of patience give a beautiful, painted-on look.
